Why everyone is talking about HYROX (and why recovery matters just as much as training)

Sled pushes, burpees, running and wall balls. If you've spent any time in a gym recently, you've probably heard someone talking about HYROX.

It's become one of the biggest fitness trends around, bringing together experienced athletes, regular gym-goers and people simply looking for a new challenge.

But with all that training comes something equally important that we don't always talk about enough: recovery.

At YOU Sauna Hitchin, we love seeing people challenge themselves. We also believe that knowing when to slow down is just as important as knowing when to push harder.

So, what exactly is HYROX?

HYROX is a fitness race that combines running with functional strength exercises. It started in Hamburg, Germany, in 2017 and has grown into an international competition.

The format is simple to understand, although completing it is another story!

You run 1 kilometre, complete a workout station and repeat that eight times.

That means 8 km of running and 8 workout stations, including:

  • SkiErg

  • Sled pushes and pulls

  • Burpee broad jumps

  • Rowing

  • Farmer's carries

  • Sandbag lunges

  • Wall balls

Sounds exhausting? It certainly can be! But part of HYROX's appeal is that you don't have to be a professional athlete to take part.

There are individual, doubles and relay categories, so people can challenge themselves in different ways.

Why is HYROX becoming so popular?

One of the lovely things about HYROX is the community it creates.

People train together, encourage each other and celebrate finishing their races, whether they're chasing a personal best or simply hoping to cross the finish line.

And the growth has been remarkable.

From around 650 participants at its first event in 2017, HYROX has grown into a global fitness movement. In 2026, organisers expected nearly 1.5 million participants across events worldwide.

It's easy to see the appeal. Having a race to work towards gives people a reason to train consistently, develop their fitness and share the experience with friends.

But preparing for HYROX involves more than showing up at the gym.

Why recovery deserves a place in your training plan

HYROX combines endurance and strength, which can be demanding on your whole body.

Think about your legs after all those lunges, your shoulders after the SkiErg or trying to run another kilometre immediately after pushing a heavy sled.

It's a lot!

Training creates physical stress, and recovery gives your body time to adapt.

Without enough recovery, fatigue can build up, performance can suffer and the risk of injury may increase.

The foundations of recovery aren't complicated: enough sleep, good nutrition, hydration, rest days and managing your training load.

And sometimes, recovery also means giving yourself permission to do absolutely nothing for a little while.

Can sauna and cold plunging help with HYROX recovery?

This is where things get interesting.

Sauna: warmth and time to unwind

After a demanding training week, sitting in a warm sauna can feel wonderful.

The heat encourages you to sit still, slow down and relax. Many people enjoy sauna bathing as part of their recovery routine, particularly for the feeling of warmth and relaxation.

Research is exploring how sauna bathing may affect exercise recovery and cardiovascular health, but it's important not to overstate the evidence. Sauna isn't a shortcut to better performance or a replacement for proper rest.

Sometimes, simply stepping away from training and taking time to unwind is reason enough to enjoy it.

Cold plunging: refreshing, with some potential recovery benefits

Cold-water immersion has become popular among athletes, and research suggests it may help reduce perceived muscle soreness after demanding exercise.

That doesn't mean colder is always better, though.

Cold plunging isn't essential for recovery, and regularly using cold immersion immediately after strength training may slightly reduce some muscle-building adaptations.

If building strength and muscle is a major part of your HYROX training, it's worth considering when and how often you use cold water.

At YOU Sauna, we have two cold plunges:

13°C – The Chilly One: A good starting point for people new to cold plunging, although it's still very cold!

7°C – The Extra Chilly One: For people already comfortable with cold-water immersion.

Both temperatures can trigger a cold-shock response. Enter gradually, keep breathing steadily and never feel pressured to stay in longer than feels comfortable.

And remember, you don't have to plunge at all. Enjoying the sauna and relaxing afterwards is absolutely fine.

Recovery can be social, too

One of the things we love most about the growing HYROX community is how it brings people together.

And recovery can do the same.

At YOU Sauna Hitchin, we've created a welcoming space where you can come with your training partner, catch up with friends or simply enjoy some quiet time on your own.

Our traditional stone-heated sauna, cold plunges, hot showers and comfortable lounge offer somewhere to slow down outside the gym.

Stay for a tea or coffee, chat about your next race or just enjoy not having another set of burpees to complete!

We're not a traditional spa. We're a neighbourhood social sauna where everyone is welcome, whether you're training for HYROX or just looking for somewhere to unwind.

A little something for the HYROX community

To celebrate everyone putting in the hard work, we're offering 20% off our sauna and cold plunge sessions for HYROX athletes.

Train hard. Recover well. Make time for YOU.

There's something brilliant about challenging yourself and discovering what your body can do.

But progress isn't only about pushing harder. It's also about understanding when to rest.

So next time you've finished your training, perhaps swap another workout for a little time to unwind.

Your next challenge can wait 45 minutes.
