Everybody's sauna preference is slightly different, so there's no one perfect way to sauna. The most important thing is to listen to your body, take your time, and never push through feeling unwell.
As a general guide, we recommend:
Start slowly, especially if you're new to sauna. Begin with shorter rounds and build up over time.
Aim for around 10–15 minutes per sauna round, depending on how you feel. You can always step out earlier.
Always sit on a towel while using the sauna. This keeps the benches clean and comfortable for everyone.
Stay hydrated before and after your session. Please bring a water bottle with you.
Cool down gradually between sauna rounds. Take your time, breathe slowly, and let your body settle before using the cold plunge.
Rinse off before using the cold plunges. This helps keep the water clean and fresh for everyone.
Build up slowly with cold water. The cold plunge can feel intense, especially at lower temperatures, so ease in gently and keep your breathing steady.
Avoid alcohol before and during your session. Sauna and cold water both place stress on the body, so it's best to arrive well hydrated and clear-headed.
Please don't add your own essential oils or liquids to the sauna stove or coals. This can damage the equipment and affect other guests. If oils are being used as part of a guided session, our team will manage this safely.
Keep phones away from the heat and on silent. It's a shared, relaxing space, so we ask that you keep calls, scrolling, and phone use to the lounge area rather than the sauna or cold plunge.
Keep conversation gentle and considerate. A quiet chat is welcome, but please be mindful of other guests who may be there to switch off rather than socialise, especially during shared sessions.
Leave the sauna straight away if you feel dizzy, faint, sick, uncomfortable, or unwell at any point. There's no need to push through. Your best sauna session is the one that feels good for your body.
If you are pregnant, have a heart condition, blood pressure concerns, epilepsy, a serious respiratory condition, or you're unsure whether sauna or cold plunge is suitable for you, please speak to a medical professional before booking.

Starting a sauna routine is simple. Begin with short sessions and listen to your body.
For beginners, try 5–15 minutes in the sauna, followed by a cool-down or cold shower, then rest for a few minutes. Many people repeat this cycle two or three times during a session.
The key is consistency rather than intensity. Visiting the sauna once or twice a week is enough to start noticing the benefits, such as relaxation, improved recovery and better sleep.
Over time, many people naturally build their own rhythm of heat, cold and rest. What begins as a recovery tool often becomes a weekly ritual people genuinely look forward to — a moment to slow down, reset and reconnect with themselves. Read full blog on How to start a sauna routine (and why so many people fall in love with it)
-
Yes, water can be poured over the sauna stones to create steam, known as löyly.
Please be mindful and use a small amount at a time. Little and often is best. Pouring too much water at once can cool the heater down, affect the sauna temperature, or damage the equipment.
Our sauna host will help manage the steam during shared sessions, keeping the experience safe, comfortable and enjoyable for everyone.
-
For health and safety reasons, please do not bring or use your own essential oils, products or liquids in the sauna.
Only products approved for sauna use can be used safely. Unapproved oils or liquids may react with heat, damage the stove or sauna materials, create slippery surfaces, or affect other guests.
If you would like aromatherapy as part of your session, please speak to our sauna host. We’ll be happy to let you know what’s available and how it can be used safely.
-
Alongside our sauna and cold plunge sessions, we offer a programme of wellness classes including yoga, breathwork, sound baths, and traditional rituals. Keep an eye on our booking page for what's running and when, as classes and events are added regularly.

Credits are how you book your sessions at YOU Sauna Hitchin.
One credit gets you a YOU Reset session (45 minutes), and two credits gets you a YOU Restore session (90 minutes). Credits come off your balance as soon as you book, not when you actually turn up, so you'll always know exactly where you stand.
Packs are a set number of credits you buy upfront, and each one is valid for up to 60 days from the date you buy it (exact validity depends on the pack). If you don't use all your credits before the pack expires, they're forfeited; they don't roll over or convert into a refund. You can see the full details for each pack, including validity, on our booking page.
-
Membership credits
Memberships come in three tiers — 4, 8, or 12 credits per month — refreshed on your billing date. Up to 2 unused credits roll over into the following month; anything beyond that is forfeited. If you run out, you can borrow up to 1 credit from your next billing cycle.
-
You can cancel or reschedule your session up to 12 hours before your booking start time.

A mix of both. We will offer different types of sessions, some more social and others quieter, so everyone can enjoy the experience in their own way.
-
Yes. A small number of our sessions are reserved for women only.
-
We offer women-only sessions to support comfort, privacy and dignity in a swimwear, sauna and cold plunge environment. Some women may feel more comfortable using sauna, showers and cold plunge in a women-only setting, especially for personal, cultural, religious, body-confidence, postnatal, menopause or wellbeing reasons.
-
No. Most of our sessions are open to everyone aged 18+. Women-only sessions are just a small part of the weekly timetable.
-
Not at the moment. Most of our timetable is mixed and open to everyone. We may review the timetable as we grow and understand what our community needs.
-
Mixed sessions are open to everyone aged 18+, subject to our health, safety and booking requirements.
-
YOU Sauna is an inclusive wellness space. We offer mostly mixed sessions, with a small number of women-only sessions to support comfort, access and choice.
Health and safety
-
No. Sauna and cold plunge can be beneficial for many people, but they are not suitable for everyone.
Heat and cold exposure can place stress on the body, especially the heart, circulation and nervous system. If you have any health condition, are pregnant, take regular medication, or are unsure whether sauna or cold plunge is suitable for you, please speak to your GP or healthcare professional before booking.
-
Yes. Beginners are welcome to try the cold plunge, and you can go at your own pace. Many people start with short dips and gradually build up their tolerance over time.
You are always in control of how long you stay in the water, and you can simply enjoy the sauna and relaxation areas if you prefer. Listening to your body and taking it slowly is the best approach.
-
You should not use the sauna or cold plunge without medical advice if you have, or may have, a heart condition, uncontrolled high or low blood pressure, epilepsy, diabetes, fainting episodes, respiratory conditions, kidney problems, cold sensitivity, Raynaud’s disease, open wounds, skin infections, recent surgery, or any condition affected by heat, cold or changes in circulation.
-
Yes. All guests must complete our Participant Waiver before using the sauna, cold plunge or any thermal facilities. This helps us understand any important health information and reminds you of the risks, responsibilities and safety rules before you take part.
-
Some medications can affect blood pressure, heart rate, hydration, temperature regulation, alertness or how your body responds to heat and cold. If you take regular medication, especially for blood pressure, heart health, anxiety, sleep, pain relief, blood thinning or sedation, please check with your GP or pharmacist before using sauna or cold plunge.
-
No. Please do not attend if you feel unwell, dizzy, faint, feverish, sick, unusually tired, have an infection, or have any contagious illness. Sauna and cold plunge can put extra strain on the body, and we want you and other guests to stay safe.
-
No. Please do not use the sauna, cold plunge or any thermal facilities after drinking alcohol or taking recreational drugs. Alcohol and drugs can affect judgement, hydration, blood pressure and the body’s ability to respond safely to heat and cold.
-
Listen to your body. We recommend starting gently, especially if you are new to sauna. A typical sauna round may be around 10 to 15 minutes, but you should leave sooner if you feel too hot, dizzy, light-headed, nauseous, uncomfortable or simply ready to come out.
-
Cold plunge should always be approached gradually. Start short, breathe calmly and come out if you feel uncomfortable, dizzy, numb, panicky or unable to control your breathing.
Longer is not always better. The aim is to feel restored, not pushed beyond your limits.
-
No. Cold plunge is completely optional. You are welcome to use the sauna only, rest between rounds, or skip any part of the session that does not feel right for you.
-
Leave the sauna or cold plunge immediately, sit down, breathe slowly and let a member of staff know. Do not try to “push through” discomfort. Your safety comes first.
-
No. YOU Sauna does not provide medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Any information we share is for general wellbeing and safety only. If you have a medical question, please speak to a qualified healthcare professional.
-
Please bring swimwear, a water bottle, suitable footwear for wet areas and two towels. One towel should be used to sit on in the sauna, and the other for drying afterwards. We recommend removing jewellery, watches, glasses and anything that may become hot in the sauna.
-
Yes. Please shower before entering the sauna or cold plunge, and between sauna and plunge use where appropriate. This helps keep the space clean, hygienic and comfortable for everyone.
-
We recommend removing jewellery, watches, glasses and metal accessories before entering the sauna. Metal can become hot and may cause discomfort or burns.
-
Please do not bring food, glass, alcohol or outside drinks into the sauna or plunge area. A sealed water bottle is welcome. Hydration is important, especially before and after heat exposure.
-
No. Please do not use the sauna, cold plunge or shared facilities if you have an open wound, skin infection, contagious rash, stomach bug, fever or any illness that could affect other guests.
-
If there is an emergency, please alert a member of staff immediately. Our team will follow emergency procedures, which may include providing first aid support, contacting your emergency contact or calling emergency services.
-
Listen to your body. Sauna and cold plunge should never feel like something you have to endure. Leave at any time, rest when you need to, hydrate and ask staff for help if something does not feel right.
