Can sauna help YOU sleep better?

For years, I thought waking up at 3am was just part of being an adult.

The day would be busy. Work deadlines, family life, endless lists running through my head. I’d go to bed exhausted, fall asleep easily enough, and then wake up in the middle of the night with my mind already racing.

You know the feeling. You check the time. 3:07am.

Suddenly you’re thinking about tomorrow’s meeting, that email you forgot to send, the thing your child mentioned before bed, a bill that needs paying, or a conversation you wish had gone differently. 😬

Your body is tired, but your mind is wide awake.

As I’ve moved into my forties, I noticed this happening more often. Whether it was stress, hormones, the pace of modern life, or a combination of everything, good sleep started to feel less automatic than it once did.

Then I discovered sauna.

I can’t say it will work for everyone. We are all different, and sleep is incredibly personal. But I can honestly say that regular sauna sessions have made one of the biggest differences to my sleep that I’ve experienced.

That is one of the reasons I fell in love with the practice and, ultimately, part of the reason I built YOU Sauna Hitchin.

Why might sauna help?

The relationship between heat and sleep is fascinating. As your body prepares for sleep, your core temperature naturally starts to drop. This cooling process is one of the signals that tells your brain it’s time to rest.

When you spend time in a sauna, your body heats up. Afterwards, as you cool down again, that process may help support your body’s natural transition towards sleep.

Research has shown that passive heating, such as warm baths, hot tubs and sauna use, can help some people fall asleep more easily and improve sleep quality. Scientists believe part of this effect comes from the body’s cooling response after heat exposure.

In simple terms, your body warms up, then gently winds down.

More than heat

For me, though, I don’t think it is just about temperature.

It’s about what happens mentally. Most of us spend our days switched on. We are constantly responding, planning, worrying, solving problems and moving from one thing to the next.

Sauna creates a pause.

You cannot scroll endlessly. You cannot rush. You cannot multitask very well.

You simply sit. You breathe. You slow down.

For 45 minutes, the outside world becomes a little quieter. Sometimes that is exactly what a busy nervous system needs.

The challenge of midlife sleep

One thing I hear again and again from women is that sleep seems to change in midlife.

You may find yourself waking during the night more often. Falling back asleep becomes harder. Stress feels more physical. Hormonal changes can make everything feel a little less predictable.

If that sounds familiar, you’re certainly not alone.

Sauna isn’t a cure for poor sleep, menopause or stress. But many people find that creating regular rituals around rest can help them feel calmer, more grounded and better prepared for sleep. Sometimes the answer isn’t finding another productivity hack. Sometimes it’s giving ourselves permission to slow down.

A simple evening ritual

One of my favourite ways to use sauna is as part of an evening reset. Arrive carrying the day with you.

Spend time in the heat. Take a few slow breaths. Cool down gradually.

Drink water. Keep the rest of the evening simple.

By the time you get home, your body often feels softer, your mind feels quieter and sleep feels a little closer.

It doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, that’s part of the beauty of it.

My experience

The biggest change for me wasn’t falling asleep. It was staying asleep. Those regular 3am wake-ups became less frequent. My body felt calmer. I woke up feeling more rested and less like I had spent the night wrestling with my thoughts.

Again, that is only my experience. Sauna isn’t a magic solution, and it won’t replace good sleep habits, medical advice or addressing the causes of stress in our lives.

But it helped me.

And if you’re someone who struggles to switch off, perhaps it might help you too. That is why we built YOU Sauna Hitchin.

Not as another thing to achieve or optimise.

But as a place to pause.

A place to breathe.

A place to slow down.

And perhaps, just perhaps, a place that helps you sleep a little better too.
