YOUR perfect morning ritual: heat, cold and a proper reset
There’s something about the early hours that feels full of possibility. Before the emails, the commute, the noise, the morning is yours. And if you’re going to invest that time in anything, it might as well be something that changes how the rest of your day feels.
Why the morning is the best time to do this?
Most of us start the day already behind. We reach for our phones before we’ve even sat up, scroll through notifications before breakfast, and by the time we leave the house, we’re already in reactive mode.
A morning sauna and cold plunge session interrupts that pattern completely.
The heat gently raises your core temperature and increases blood flow, the same physiological shift your body makes naturally when you’re fully awake and energised. The cold plunge that follows triggers a release of noradrenaline and endorphins, helping sharpen focus, lift mood, and create a quiet sense of resilience that carries through the day.
But beyond the science, there’s something simpler going on. When you do something intentional with your body first thing in the morning, you start the day feeling like you’re already winning. You’ve already chosen yourself before the world had a chance to ask anything of you. That feeling is hard to replicate any other way.
Even a single round before work can completely change how the school run, commute, or first meeting of the day feels.
Here’s how it works
Start in the sauna: 10 to 15 minutes
Step in. Settle down. Close your eyes.
Let the heat do its work. Your core temperature rises slowly, your heart rate picks up, and your muscles begin to soften. The sauna asks nothing of you except to breathe.
Long, steady breaths in through your nose, out through your mouth.
This is your signal to slow down, even as the heat turns up.
For beginners, 10 minutes is more than enough. If you’re more experienced, stretch it to 15. The goal isn’t to see how long you can last. The goal is simply to arrive fully in your own body.
The transition: 2 minutes
Step out slowly. Drink some water.
This is the moment most people rush, and it’s worth not doing that. Let your body cool naturally for a couple of minutes. Breathe through your nose, consciously. If you notice your mind starting to chatter, the to do list, the noise, this is where you can gently bring it back.
The transition isn’t dead time. It’s a bridge.
The cold plunge: 1 to 3 minutes
Here’s where the magic happens and also where most people hesitate.
Step in calmly. Don’t brace, don’t gasp. Instead, exhale first, slowly and deliberately, before the cold hits. That long out breath is your anchor. It tells your body this is a choice, not a threat.
The cold causes your blood vessels to constrict, pushing circulation deeper into the body and triggering a wave of endorphins that can last for hours. There’s a reason people who cold plunge regularly describe it as addictive.
Start with 60 seconds. Work up to three minutes over time. You’ll know when you’re ready.
A note on repeating the cycle
If you have more time, or you’re experienced with contrast therapy, you can repeat the sauna and plunge cycle one to two more times. If you’re short on time, a single round is still transformative. This doesn’t have to be a two hour event.
A few things to keep in mind
Hydrate. A glass of water before you start, another during your transition, and one more after. Your body loses more than you think in the heat.
Always end on cold. Many people find finishing with the plunge leaves them feeling more energised, focused and uplifted throughout the day.
Listen to yourself. If you feel lightheaded or dizzy at any point, step out. This isn’t a challenge to win. It’s a ritual to return to.
