Sauna traditions: Nordic roots and why we do things the Finnish way
A warm welcome to Hitchin
Opening this spring in Hitchin, YOU Sauna Hitchin brings the warmth of an ancient Nordic ritual to Hertfordshire. Sauna is not a trend or a passing fad. It is a practice with roots stretching back thousands of years across Finland and neighbouring regions. Long before modern spas, simple heated shelters and smoke saunas were used for washing, healing, childbirth and quiet ritual.
Over time, these places of heat became part of everyday life. Families gathered there. Neighbours talked. People paused, rested and reset. Similar heat traditions emerged across Scandinavia, the Baltics and into Russia, including the bastu and the banya. Each was shaped by local weather, wood and water, but all shared the same core elements. Heat. Steam. The steady rhythm of warm and cool.
A different bathing story in Britain
Britain’s bathing history follows a different path. The Romans introduced public baths and heated rooms, and later centuries saw renewed interest through Turkish baths and Victorian steam rooms.
The Finnish-style sauna we follow at YOU Sauna Hitchin arrived much later. It came to the UK alongside modern wellness culture and has since been taken up in specialist studios, gyms and private homes.
The simple magic of löyly
What sets the Finnish approach apart, and why we have chosen it for our studio, is its simplicity. A stove heats a pile of stones. Water is poured over them and a brief, fragrant cloud of steam rises. In Finnish, this moment is called löyly.
That burst of steam invites you to slow your breathing and feel the heat in a new way. The room shifts from dry warmth to deeper humidity, then settles again. Temperatures are high, often between seventy and one hundred degrees, but the time spent inside is short. Sessions move in a steady rhythm. A few minutes in the heat, then into cool water or a shower. Time to rest in neutral air, then back again.
It is this contrast that matters. Moving between extremes, then returning gently to balance. This is what links the physical benefits of sauna with its sense of calm.
Community, ritual and contrast
The Finnish sauna is not only about the body. It is also a social practice. In Finland, saunas have long been places where people come together. Spaces for conversation, for shared silence, and for important moments in life.
We want YOU Sauna Hitchin to carry that same spirit. A calm, respectful room where neighbours meet, where people recover after a run, and where friends build a simple weekly ritual.
To complete the experience, we pair the sauna with a cold plunge. Moving between hot and cold is central to Nordic bathing. The cold sharpens the senses. Rest settles the nerves. Repeating the cycle often leaves people feeling clear-headed and energised.
Our plunge and lounge are designed with that balance in mind. A safe, considered contrast that feels welcoming for beginners and satisfying for those who return week after week.
Why the Finnish way suits Hitchin
Bringing a sense of Nordic calm to Hitchin felt natural. The Finnish approach is both ancient and practical. It values simple materials, shared rhythm, and the powerful effect of moving between heat and cold.
Whether you come to recover from training, to reset after a busy week, or to sit quietly with a friend in a warm room, our studio is designed to offer an authentic, evidence-informed way to feel better.
Opening this spring, YOU Sauna Hitchin will be a place to slow down. To breathe through the löyly. To step back into the fresh air feeling refreshed and restored.
We’re building this space for YOU.
